The weekend auctions offer rare, significant cars for the well-heeled—and well-wheeled—auto collector.

After the awards ceremony on the lawn in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach on Sunday, inspired car collectors had the opportunity to add to their collections by attending the Pebble Beach Auction, presented by Gooding & Company.
The 2005 Pebble Beach Auction was held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at the Equestrian Center, which is just up the hill from the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Highlighting the 2005 event was the sale of the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder for US$3.96 million.

Designed by Pininfarina with aluminum bodywork constructed by Scaglietti, chassis No. 09437 was the first 275 GTS/4NART Spyder and one of only ten ever built, and one of only two with an alloy body. Finishing second at the Sebring 12 Hours sports car race on April 21, 1967, at the hands of Denise McCluggage and Marianne "Pinkie" Rollo, this car was also featured in the 1968 movie The Thomas Crown Affair. After filming was completed, the car was sent to Road & Track magazine for testing and was described by the magazine editors as "the most satisfying sports car in the world."
The 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder was the top-selling car at any of the Monterey area auctions this year, but last year the Pebble Beach Auction set a world record for the highest price ever paid for an American automobile at auction with the sale of the 1935 "Mormon Meteor" Duesenberg SJ Speedster for US$4.455 million.

Other top sellers at the Pebble Beach Auction included a 1933 Duesenberg SJ Murphy at $2.2 million, a 1957 Jaguar XKSS Roadster at $1.925 million, a 1955 Jaguar D-Type Sports Racer at $1.815 million, a 1969 Ferrari Formula One Grand Prix car at $1.32 million, a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder prototype at $1.034 million, and a 1966 Volkswagen Campmobile at $99,000. Total sales this year were $22,089,020.

New Auction Partner
The Pebble Beach Auction has been a part of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance since 1990 and each year offers some of the most important collector cars ever offered at auction. Last year the auction was presented for the first time by Gooding & Company, a new partner with the Concours, headed by David Gooding, who has been associated with the Pebble Beach Auction since its inception.

Gooding established the first Pebble Beach Auction while at Christie's International Motor Cars Ltd, and was involved with the Pebble Beach Auction for the first twelve years. Gooding established Gooding & Company in summer 2003 and generated almost $20 million in sales prior to the 2004 Pebble Beach Auction. Before establishing Gooding & Company, Gooding served as president and CEO of RM Auctions. During his time at RM Auctions sales included the 1962 Le Mans-Winning Ferrari 330 TRI LM, which sold for $6.49 million, the highest price paid for a car at auction in the last 15 years.

Other Monterey Auctions
The 20th annual Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction, owned by RM Auctions, was held at the Portola Plaza Hotel in downtown Monterey on both Friday and Saturday evenings. The event set a record, with total sales over two days of $31 million.

The highlight of this year's auction was the sale of a rare 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago SpecialeTeardrop Coupe for $3.685 million. Other top sellers included a 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype that won the 24 Hours of Daytona, driven by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby, at $2,502,500; a 1932 Alfa Romeo P3 Tipo B Monoposto at $2.1 million; a 1970 Ferrari 512S Spyder Sports Racing Car at $1.947 million; a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta at $1,457,500; a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California at $1.32 million; and a 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster at $1,017,500.
The Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction also included the U.S. debut of the 2006 Maybach 57 S, a new version of the Maybach 57, powered by a 604-horsepower 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine. With the help of Tonight Show host Jay Leno, who drove the 57 S onstage, accompanied by famed driver Sir Stirling Moss, the car was sold to a Texas collector for $550,000 and $427,000 was raised for the Boys & Girls Club of America.

The Russo and Steele Auction was also held over the Pebble Beach Concours weekend on Saturday, August 20th, at the Monterey Marriott Hotel. Auction sales totaled more than $10 million, and notable cars sold included a 1965 Shelby 427 Daytona Coupe at $1,457,500 and a 1963 Shelby Cobra at $1,292,500.

The Christie's Auction was held again this year at the Monterey Jet Center on Thursday, August 18th, preceding most of the other Pebble Beach Concours weekend events. A total of 36 cars and collector items were sold for a total of nearly $10 million. At the top of the list was a 1937 Talbo-Lago T150 C SS Teardrop Coupe at $3.535 million, followed by a 1965 Ferrari 1512 Formula One Monoposto at $1.115 million, a 1930 Bugatti Type 43A Roadster at $1.115 million, and a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Nembo Spyder at $895,000.
