Jenson Button and Jessica Michibata woke in their St. Tropez villa to find they’d been robbed of nearly a half million dollars worth of valuables, including Michibata’s nearly $400,000 engagement ring, British media reported.
The glamorous couple and three friends were asleep when the crooks reportedly piped knockout gas through an air-conditioning unit and slipped inside.
A source close to 35-year-old Button claimed police told the Formula One driver they suspected they and their friends had been rendered unconscious.
“Jenson is convinced that’s what happened too,” the source told The Sun. “The burglars were in the same room as him and Jessica, rifling through all their drawers, but they weren’t disturbed at all because the effects of the gas gives the burglars free rein.”
The frightening technique has become increasingly common during the past five years, as thieves target wealthy visitors to the resort town along the French Riviera, police told Button.
The couple and their friends were so rattled by the terrifying episode they cut their vacation short and bolted the following day, the source said.
