The BMW M3 launched in 1987, is the most successful touring race car ever built. Back in the 80s Group A regulations were very simple : to obtain the homologation it was necessary to built 5000 cars in a period of 12 month, then extensions could be allowed but an extra serial of 500 cars was required. BMW soon understood the huge potential of a super-Series 3 coupe despite a small 4 cylinder engine. With the knowledge acquired on the famous M12/7 – 2 liter 16 V engine used on F2s and prototypes in the 70s and 80s it was possible to built a 2.3 liter /16V / Butterfly intake unit producing 200 HP in road version but more than 300 HP in the race car. From 1987 to 1989 Group A cars were still very closed from the road version but in 1990 appeared the 2.5 Sport EVO version to full DTM specifications to race against Mercedes and Audi. The very late 1991 cars have reinforced chassis, upgraded suspension, 6 speeds gear box, ABS, 375 HP, adjustable sway bars from the cockpit, digital dash with data logging etc … The M3s trusted the first places in national and international championships from 1987 to 1992 including 24 Hours of SPA in 87/88/90/92 and 24 Hours of Nurburgring in 89/90/91/92.
